Called one of the biggest derbies in the world, Mohun Bagan – East Bengal matches are referred to as the ‘Boro match’, which literally translates to ‘the big match’. The I-League’s biggest occasion, the entire city of Kolkata will come to a standstill when these two clubs meet at the Salk Lake Stadium on Sunday.
This season, neither club is doing particularly well, with Mohun Bagan in 8th place and East Bengal in 10th – though it must be said that East Bengal has played only 5 matches in the season so far.
Both clubs have conceded only 7 goals, which coincidently is also the second best in the league, but while East Bengal has already scored 10, Mohun Bagan is lagging behind with only 6 goals in 8 matches.
The key players for both teams with be their front man – Odofa Okelie, who is in the form of his life with Mohun Bagan, and Chidi Edeh for East Bengal, who has scored 6 goals in 5 games for East Bengal.
However, one thing is for sure – the match will be an electric one. And who can forget last season’s encounter, when Mohun Bagan’s Syed Rahim Nabi was hit by brick flung at him from the stands.
