Despite the World Cup running in full swing, Delhites proved that there’s nothing called football overdose. Over the weekend, the capital witnessed the very 1st Challenger Futsal Cup. The 11-team tournament was held at the Thyagraj Stadium and attracted teams from all over the Delhi-NCR Region.
Corporate sides rubbed shoulders with local clubs as well as fan driven sides. The teams, divided into 4 groups went tooth and nail over two matches as the top two teams progressed to the knockouts. All wasn’t gloomy for the teams that finished bottom of their groups as a Plate competition eventually won by TCS meant they could leave with their heads held high.
Total Football – who looked good in the groups and through their 8-3 win over Hyundai – were eventually humbled by QD’s in the last- eight. In the top half of this draw, FIS Champions and Pandara Fc made serene progress to the last-8 before FIS swept aside Pandara 5-2. The semi-final between QD’s and FIS was tense affair as the two sides were inseparable in normal time – locked at 3-3 – and in the ensuing shootout, QD’s prevailed to book a place in the final.
In the bottom half of the draw, Eurasia were completely dominant. They first took out Rebels United A 10-2 and booked a semi-final with Red Devils. The latter, had also made impressive progress as they’d accounted for Radio One 5-3. However, in the semis they were once again undone by Eurasia as the latter won comfortably 7-2.
The final – between QD’s and Eurasia – promised to be another eye catching and it didn’t disappoint. QD’s who’d escaped a tense semi-final put their foot down on the accelerator and never allowed Eurasia to settle and eventually won 5-3 and became the Champions of the very first Futsal tournament held in the capital.
