From being an unknown footballer to becoming the all-time leading goal scorer for his country, Sunil Chhetri has surely grown as a player and as a leader in past years.
The footballer from Secunderabad became India’s all-time top scorer courtesy of his first half strike against Nepal in yesterday’s international friendly at the Kanchenjanga stadium in Siliguri. The Bengaluru FC striker has crossed his predecessor, Bhaichung Bhutia’s goal tally with 43 goals in 80 games for India.
Bhaichung Bhutia was in the stands watching the match and witnessed his record being usurped by the 29-year-old. Bhutia said “He deserves every bit of it. I want to congratulate Sunil and wish him all the luck in the future matches. I want him to score as many as possible and I`m sure he will.”
Representing the nation at International stage by playing for Sporting Lisbon and Kansas City Wizards, Sunil has been the global face of Indian football. With the game finally getting its long due respect and the age still on his side, the Bengaluru FC striker can create something big for Indian Football and its fans.
