Friday will see the first-ever Shillong derby in the I-League as Shillong Lajong will play host to I-League newcomers Rangdajied United. Shillong Lajong is riding high up the table, currently sitting on 5th, while Rangdajied United seems to be designated as the league’s whipping boys, rooted to the foot of the table with a measly 3 points.
Shillong Lajong ‘s form has been erratic, winning 3 games and drawing 4, and while goals have been easy to come by, having scored 12, which incidentally is the joint-second highest in the league. However, they have also conceded 12 goals, and only 2 other teams in the league have a worse record – Mumbai FC and Rangdajied United.
And that perhaps is what is wrong with Rangdajied United – too many goals conceded – 17 – and only 5 goals scored. And in the end, perhaps that will make the difference. Shillong Lajong striker Cornell Glen has individually scored more goals – 6 – than the entire Rangdajied United team. However, during the international break, India’s ‘keeper Subrata Pal has signed for United on loan, and perhaps will be more than equal to the task of stopping Glen and co.
